Chapter 24

MAGGIE

I am thoroughly exhausted. The lack of sleep, coupled with information overload, almost had me skipping my shower and crawling right into bed. As I stand underneath the warm water, allowing it to cascade over my head, I’m happy I didn’t skip it after all.

The heat caresses my fatigued muscles, and the smell of lavender soap cocoons me. The shower ritual is comforting in this strange land, where so many things are foreign. I never thought a shower would feel like home, but it does.

My eyelids grow even heavier and I’m thankful for it. I was afraid the shower would do the exact opposite. That I would recount every word that was spoken and reorganize our plans for the millionth time. Instead, my mind went numb, and I thought of nothing but the fragrance of the soap.

When I’ve scrubbed myself to my satisfaction, I shut off the water and step from the stone encasement, pulling a white robe over my body. I reach for a pale pink towel from the rack and wrap it around my hair so I can brush my teeth.

My hand darts out, wiping away the steam on the mirror, and the reflection I see staring back at me is anything but what I expected. There are no bags under my eyes or a fine line in sight. This place and its magical properties took care of that the moment I stepped foot here. My hair shines brighter, and my eyes are a deeper, crisper blue.

This, I will miss.

I make quick work of finishing up my nightly routine, complete with lotion application and combing out my hair. I’m still using the towel to wring out the ends of my hair when I enter my room and yelp at the man sitting on my bed.

“Tavy, what are you doing in here?” My voice warbles.

“I want in.” It’s all he says, and my eyes narrow in on him.

“What?” I snip, thoroughly confused.

“I want in on your plan. The one you have with Veda.”

I grind my teeth. Freaking Veda.

“What did she tell you?” Under my breath I go on a rant that has Tavy’s eyes opening wider. “It’s just like Veda to go opening her big fat mouth. She’s gonna get us caught before we even get out of here. Stupid. I thought she was smarter than that.”

He holds his hands up. “Whoa. Calm down. I don’t know what the plan is. I only know that you’re up to something.” I suck my teeth waiting for him to elaborate. He huffs out a breath and continues. “I caught Veda sneaking around the kitchen, putting a basket together. I know Veda isn’t going on a picnic.”

“How do you know? She might be.”

He levels me with a stare that screams, really.

“With whom, Maggie? One of her million friends?” He chuckles darkly. “You and I both know she has few of those, and the ones she has aren’t running around on a picnic with her.”

I sigh heavily, taking a seat next to him on the bed and tapping his knee.
